So, what to do. It’s getting chilly and the kids are indoors more now. So, instead of the park – we dance! This is one I just found on Amazon – you can purchase the MP3 or any other kids song for less than a $1. Of course, you can use any song or radio station and do the same thing. I have also found Kids Public Radio (www.KPR.org) – it’s great!!

Or make some use of those musical birthday cards. My 3 year old is usually in charge of the card – and loves opening and closing it to make us freeze during the dance party. Her belly laughs make it all worth it!

I have personally tested a few of the games – specifically the dinner games. They actually do make dinner time in our house last longer and our three year old was very excited to get to the next card. She really loved it. And, our one year old just mimicked her sister when it was her “turn.” We had a great time with it.

I also played (today!) a First Game with my three + year old. Although it was for ages two and up, she still felt challenged as we were able to add things to it to make it tougher. And, as I was playing it I realized I could hear the birds outside…why does that matter…there were no bells, whistles, loud sirens, etc. incorporated. It was so nice to actually discuss the rules of the game and talk to each other without the wild distractions of many of the other games today. These games really hit home and make kids think – I love them!

As some of you know, I started a Capri Sun Pouch Brigade recently. It keeps my daughter busy at snack time – and environmentally, it’s a step in the right direction. I was looking into the products made from the upcycled materials and found Dwell Smart. This company makes it possible for all of the products made from the upcycled material to be sold to people like us. When I first looked up the backpacks, etc., I thought they would be very expensive like most of the recycled stuff we see in stores. I was pleasantly surprised. The backpacks are $12, pencil cases are $2, and they have a huge assortment of other items that are actually pretty cool. And, the shipping is very reasonable. Everybody wins, and your kids get a cool bag to show off at school or have your kids pick out a gift for a friend that no one else will have already gotten.

Little Orchard Game by HABA

I have a daughter who will be four in August. Over the past few months, she’s been asking to play more and more board games. We had a few, but as her attention span was so short, I hid them in the closet for a rainy day so she wouldn’t be reminded of them too often. Well, now that she’s getting a little older, I’ve branched out from the standard games and reached out to Perk’s Variety store for a little more…well…variety.

The Little Orchard Game is absolutely a hit. You can play with as many players as you want. There aren’t too many pieces to keep track of. The quality of the materials is top rate. The concept is fairly simple – beat the raven to the cherries – but the way you get there is both unique and challenging for everyone. Everyone wins, or everyone loses. It’s great for moral, memory skills, recognizing colors and working in a group. What I also thought was great about this game, it doesn’t drag on long enough for anyone to lose interest. I was always trying to figure out the next step or to see what my daughter would do next. She was excited for both my turn and hers and we have a ton of fun playing it.

It’s perfect for a young child’s birthday gift. Anyone between the ages of 3 and 8 will really enjoy it. When you get it, tell them TRMom sent ya!
